Keep the selected part to trim a song down to the section you need - a ringtone, an alarm, a highlight from a longer recording - and the clip can be as long as the file itself. Choose Cut the selected part out to remove an unwanted section from the middle, such as an advert, a cough or a long pause, and the parts before and after it are joined into one file. That is the difference between trimming and cutting: trimming keeps one part, cutting removes one.
It works from audio or video input, since it is really an audio cutter under the hood, so you can cut a song out of a video's sound or turn a favourite scene into a ringtone. For an iPhone specifically: download the M4A version and rename its extension to .m4r - that is genuinely all an iPhone ringtone file is, the same AAC audio with the extension iTunes and Finder look for.

Add the song, choose Keep the selected part and drag the handles around the section you want, such as the chorus. For an iPhone ringtone keep it under about 40 seconds and save it as M4A; for an Android ringtone an MP3 works.
Download the M4A version, then rename the file's extension from .m4a to .m4r - that is genuinely all an iPhone ringtone file is, the same AAC audio with the extension iTunes/Finder looks for. Drag the renamed file into your device's Tones section via Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows); iPhone won't set a ringtone from a file dropped straight into the Files app.
iPhone caps its own ringtones at around 40 seconds, so a clip of 30 to 40 seconds is plenty.
Copy the downloaded MP3 to your phone's Ringtones folder (via a file manager app or by transferring from a computer), then select it under Settings > Sound > Phone ringtone. Some Android phones pick it up automatically; others need a restart to show it in the list.

The cut part is saved again in the format you choose. Choose WAV and it is saved with no further compression, so it keeps exactly the sound the original had; MP3, M4A and OGG are compressed formats that make smaller files.
MP3 plays almost everywhere, M4A is the one to use for an iPhone ringtone, WAV keeps full quality for more editing and OGG makes small files.
